Essex Suffolk Chimney repairs surveys woodburnersWhy is it important to line a Chimney?

Lining a chimney is done for a number of reasons:

  • To stop condensation working through the brickwork of the chimney and staining the plaster in rooms.

  • To prevent wisps of smoke from penetrating through small gaps in the brickwork and leaving a smell inside rooms.

  • To provide a smooth and consistent passage for the flue gases to pass up through, thus ensuring a good draught, reducing condensation and sooty deposits., thus improving the performance of the chimney.

  • Some chimneys were plastered internally with a lime render and over time, this has fallen off and the internal face of the brickwork is now exposed and degrading.

A. It is quite possible that the existing liners have been installed upside-down. Instead of funnelling any moisture back down the flue, the moisture and condensate is being channelled to the outside of the chimney. Alternatively, inspection using CCTV camera may reveal one or more cracked liners.
Inserting a flexible metal liner inside the existing clay/concrete liners
is the best cure for this condition in most cases.

Q. What can I do if I want a Wood Burning Stove but don’t have a chimney?Essex Suffolk Chimney Services

A. Today you can have a stove even if you don’t have a traditional brick/stone chimney. Alternatives in the form of insulated metal chimney systems are readily available and are easily fitted. These are available in a range of finishes, from stainless steel through to matt black and can be used a feature within a building or coloured black to be discreet.

Pre-cast, lightweight chimney tops can also be fitted to
give the appearance of a traditional chimney.
